Getting Personal: Five Months ‘Till We Get Hitched

Wow, where did the time go? Tim and I got engaged in March and now it’s the end of October and we’re getting married in five months! Luckily most of the planning is out of the way and I am really getting excited about the whole thing. I mean can you go wrong with a Carolina Herrera dress, custom-designed shoes from Dana Davis, Oscar de la Renta jewelry, a bespoke suit for Tim, beloved family and friends and some great surprises?

And we have received some truly incredible gifts. I have never felt so loved or celebrated in my life. It’s been a process since I’m used to being behind the scenes, hyping others as a journalist. But I am embracing this time and just saying “yes” when family and friends want to do nice things. Check out some of the goods we are loving.

Tips and Tricks: Wrapping With Fabric

Wrapagami author, designer and illustrator Jenn Playford is a maven of fabric gift wrapping. I recently caught up with the Vancouver Island resident, who is the founder of Furochic, to talk fashionable fabrics.

How did you discover fabric gift wrap? I have always had a passion for textiles and have been an illustrator for many years. Creating my line of fabric gift wrap printed with my original patterns allowed me to combine my two passions. I have also always used fabric as a unique way to wrap my gifts and would cringe at the idea of how temporary and wasteful paper gift wrap is.

Through my online research to see if anyone else was selling fabric gift wrap, I discovered furoshiki, the traditional Japanese wrapping cloth which has been part of their culture for hundreds of years. My book features many of the traditional Japanese wrapping techniques.

How can a novice get into fabric gift wrap? Using fabric to wrap gifts is very easy, in fact it is much easier than wrapping with paper. The wraps should always be square and placed on a diagonal. The easiest wrapping technique is to place the gift in the center of the wrap and take the two opposite corners together and tie a square knot over the center of the gift. You then take the remaining two corners and tie another square knot. This will form a bow on top of the gift.

What is your current favorite way to wrap a gift? I love to embellish my gifts with butterflies, silk flowers and accessories that I can clip or pin onto the fabric. I like to chose the fabric color and embellishment to reflect the occasion and personality of the recipient. For the holidays, I like to weave the fabric corners through the loop of an ornament before I finish tying my square knot which will hold it in place and make the gift look special.

My favorite wrapping technique right now is the Pocket Wrap where you form a pocket on the front of the gift to fill with another gift or a greeting card. It is very easy to do, but looks impressive! One of the pleasures of wrapping with fabric is watching the recipients response as they realize they get to keep the gift wrap as part of the gift.

Gifted Ones: It’s Me!

What is the first gift you remember receiving? A squeaky little pig that I took everywhere with me. There was an infamous incident where I thought it was lost, but I realized it was just in the pocket of my Oshkosh overalls.

What are the most memorable gifts you’ve been given over the years? Esprit clothes when I was a kid, vintage 1940s barware from my sister, my antique ruby engagement ring, a crotcheted Russian doll my Mom made for me.

What are your favorite gifts to buy people? Coffee table books, handmade soaps from Soaptopia in Mar Vista, delivered Peanut Butter S’More Pie from I Heart Pies, Italian olive tree adoption from Nudo and non-iron men’s dress shirts from Brooks Brothers — they are a revelation.

What’s your go-to shop or online resource for great gifts? I love going to Calypso St. Barth in Brentwood for boho chic blankets and beach towels (their gift wrap is amazing), Kate Spade and online, it’s all about Zappos for the quickest free shipping on everything from Ray-Bans to Le Creuset cookware.

What is your favorite charitable cause? Kids of Kilimanjaro, the school lunch program in Tanzania, East Africa that feeds 15,000 students each day, founded by my Dad. I’ve been a director since 2005, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. These kids are incredible and passionate about their education.

Getting Personal: Reusing Gift Wrap

In addition to being eco-friendly, recycling gift wrap, bags, tissue and ribbon is a great way to save a few bucks when it comes time for gift giving. I save ribbon in a shoebox (I spool them for a cleaner look), keep nice gift bags I can reuse in our guest closet and house cute gift wrap and tissue that can be used again in a basket. This way, I can wrap a gift at anytime, day or night, without worrying about running to the store.

Tips and Tricks: Five-Minute Fudge

Need a sweet gift in a flash? It doesn’t get much easier than Five-Minute Fudge. I love that it can be modified with peanut butter chips instead of butterscotch and that you can also add in anything from walnut pieces to currants. I serve and gift this fudge throughout the holiday season.

1 (12-ounce) bag of semisweet chocolate morsels

1 (12-ounce) bag of butterscotch morsels

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

8-inch square Pyrex or similar dish

Place a heavy pot on the stove over low heat. Add the chips and milk and stir until everything is melted. Then stir in the vanilla and remove fudge from heat (you don’t want burnt fudge!) Pour the melted goodness into the pan and chill covered in the fridge. It’s so delicious (and pretty rich) so you can serve in small slices or wrap larger pieces to give as gifts.
