Gifted Ones: My Best Dressed Picks

Love everything about Gwyneth Paltrow in this white dress and cape from Tom Ford.

Angelina Jolie in Versace (her right leg now has its own Twitter page.)

Milla Jovovich channels Old Hollywood in this Elie Saab Haute Couture gown.

Michelle Williams is sweetly chic in Louis Vuitton. The peplum, ruffles and bow pin are feminine and you can see the dress is actually coral compared to the red carpet.

Tips and Tricks: My New Favorite Salad

The other night I made this salad and I could not wait to eat it again the next day for lunch. It’s composed simply of kale (massage the leaves with some lemon juice and olive oil to soften), goat cheese, toasted almonds and mandarin oranges. I want to try it with tangerine slices too. It’s great with a light white balsamic dressing. The one I made was comprised of:

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

2 teaspoons honey

A little pepper to taste

Art of Motion Picture Costume Design

This year FIDM is celebrating its 20th annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” exhibition, featuring more than 100 costumes from 2011 films, including all five Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design. You’ll also spy a magnificent dress from last year’s Academy Award winner, Alice in Wonderland, designed by Colleen Atwood.

The free exhibit, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, runs through April 28, 2012. I highly suggest going if you are in the L.A. area. In addition to seeing some incredible costumes from films such as The Artist (pictured), W.E., Jane Eyre, Hugo, Anonymous and Water for Elephants, among others, FIDM’s Museum & Galleries is also featuring prized pieces such as a dress worn by Queen Victoria and an incredible wedding gown from the 1860s.

I had the pleasure of checking out the exhibition with designer Yotam Solomon and got to see all my FIDM friends.

Gifted Ones: Adele

How stunning are these shots from March VOGUE? Tim and I were lucky enough to see her show at the Hollywood Bowl when she toured for 19, but I’m even more in love with 21, and I think the rest of the world is too. So talented and quite a charmer too — I loved her 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper.

Getting Personal: Get Your Blog On

Last September, the FIDM Alumni Association asked me to teach a workshop for beginning bloggers. It was sold out and a lot of fun so we are doing it again on Saturday, March 3, 2012, and the best part is that it’s also open to the public. Blogging Basics covers everything from domain names and finding inspiration to posting, crediting and monetizing your blog and will be held Downtown in Los Angeles.

It’s perfect if you’re been wanting to start a blog or already have one, but want to take it to the next level. The workshop is from 9:30am to 1:30pm (and includes lunch) and is $45. Please email me if you are interested and I can give you more information. Space is limited. Would love to see you there!

The class is now full. Look forward to seeing everyone there!

Gifted Ones: Jessica Ramakrishnan

Jessica and I met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when we were 19, as we were both in town doing an internship at a Details-style men’s magazine. We hit it off immediately and I visited her in London several times, she came to L.A., we went to Vegas, Dublin and eventually she moved to New York, where we once found an abandoned Wassily-style chair on the street. She’s one of my favorite women on the planet and she gives really good gifts (Exhibit A: Her last present to me was the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit monograph.) She’s living in New Orleans at the moment and her fiction debut was recently published in PANK.

What is the first gift you remember receiving? I don’t remember receiving it exactly, but it was a red checkered mini suitcase from my father when I was around four or so. He always wanted to me to have my own luggage to go places, and that first piece set the course of my life.

What are some favorite gifts you received over the years? I’m lucky enough to be friends with someone who’s a gift expert. Highlights from her are my Clare Vivier foldover clutch and a Kate Spade sparkly gold clutch. Aside from beautiful, functional things, I love gifts that allow for journeys such as my cutie little VW Cabrio (my first car!) and tickets to see John Guare’s play Free Man of Color (with Mos Def) at the Lincoln Center a couple of years back. The former has given me unbelievable freedom, and the latter continues to inform my understanding of the city I live in, and American history.

Recently, for no reason at all, a friend sent me a platter from Fish’s Eddy inscribed with words, “The sighted will never know: to touch words and have them touch you back” in Braille. When I received that, all I could think was that the real gift was the giver.

What types of gifts do you like to buy people? Books! I try to consider what people might be interested in absorbing, research and buy accordingly. My finest gifting hour to date was a cross-country trip I took my mother on to Morocco, though of course, in light of all the gifts she’s given me, it was minor.

What’s your go-to website or shop for gifts? Amazon, and in real life antiquarian and independent bookstores. I also adore jewelry from A Peace Treaty and Scriptura for gorgeous stationery.

Current favorite charity? 826 National.
