Getting Personal: Oh, Canada!

My family has a non-profit, Kids of Kilimanjaro, and at last year’s gala fundraiser Tim bid on a hotel stay in Vancouver. He has always dreamed of going salmon fishing there (I haven’t been fishing since I was nine) and we also have some great meals planned and are seeing friends. Fun fact: My parents were married in a registry office in Vancouver due to immigration issues. I think their wedding cost five dollars.

Happy Labor Day weekend! Be safe and have fun!

Tips and Tricks: Home Away From Home

We just booked a trip to Austin with one of our favorite couples and I cannot wait. We have been wanting to visit this eclectic Texas city for years and it’s finally happening in October. When all of the boutique hotels we loved were sold out (and some others were asking for $495+) we decided to rent a house instead. Tim and I have done this several times and it’s always cheaper than a hotel, allows for more privacy and you can stock the kitchen with all your favorite drinks and snacks. I love using these two sites:

Airbnb: They are in more than 28,000 cities and 192 countries and many listings are design savvy. Don’t miss the roundup of Airbnb Picks — amazing and inspiring! I want to stay in a yurt!

VRBO: The 190,000 global listings are easy to search and we’ve used this site to book several trips to Hawaii. Bonus: there are no commissions.

There are many more out there as well as individual properties like the metallic gold Acido Dorado that’s pictured above. I want to rent it one day!

Ask Victoria: What Are The Fall 2012 Trends?

I’m really feeling the fall 2012 trends and cannot wait to get my hands on a black leather skirt, some geometric prints, a roomy coat and some gold threaded opulence! The best thing about trends? They are available across all price levels so if you don’t want to invest in designer pieces try places such as Zara and H&M. Other big trends for the season include lace, peplums, denim chambray shirts and velvet.

Gifted Ones: Loeffler Randall

shoes and handagsLaunched in 2005, Loeffler Randall was founded by designer Jessie Randall and the result was a line of elegant, well-made and super feminine footwear. A favorite of fashion editors, celebrities and stylish gals all over the globe, Loeffler Randall is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands. How chic are those bags?!

Tips and Tricks: Office Dressing

I don’t actually work in an office, but I visit them on occasion, and think these are some good rules to stick by when dressing for nine-to-five:

Keep skirt lengths at or just above the knee

Don’t wear heels higher than three inches.

If you’re wearing a pencil skirt, pair it with a looser blouse or top.

Keep makeup simple. Smokey eyes and neon lips aren’t apropos.

Don’t show cleavage.

Question: I recently left corporate America, where I had to dress conservatively, to take a job in marketing and public relations. I still want to dress appropriate, but there’s a lot more room to express fashion. What are some ideas?

Answer: I am personally a big fan of dresses, because you can wear them so many ways with a simple change up of accessories. Now that you are in a more creative environment, consider adding interesting color, texture or prints to your office wardrobe. It’s likely that you can wear all of these pieces in your personal life so you’re getting more bang for your buck too! Some other ideas:

Most Wanted: Leather Looks

It may be sweltering at the moment, but come fall, leather is going to be all over the place. I love pairing edgy leather with girly sweaters or bright color.

Gifted Ones: Karyn Millet

You might remember my good friend Karyn Millet from this post, but it’s definitely time to revisit this incredibly talented photographer who serves up endless inspiration. Her new site, SHOPkarynmillet.com, features affordable artworks (we currently have three, but I want more!) that look amazing in all areas of the home.

Karyn is known for her award-winning interior design work, but she also shoots everything from travel and food to landmarks and abstracts. When we move next year I am definitely hoping to add to our growing collection.
