Getting Personal: Getting a Bar Method Butt

I’ve been wanting to write about this topic for awhile now. It seems very strange to dedicate a whole post to anyone’s bum, let alone my own, “but” I feel the time has come to explain how I managed to attain a rounded, lifted backside. Growing up I was heavily influenced by 90s hip hop and R&B culture and I heard a lot about butts. It’s pretty known that men like a booty, be it small, medium or large. I had no real butt, even when I was a state-ranked swimmer in high school. And I don’t mean to stereotype, but Asian girls are not known for juicy rear ends. I mean, it was there, but it was not even my fifth best physical feature.

When I started doing Bar Method a little over two years ago, I noticed within the first two to three months that things were happening. My hamstrings were getting carved out and my seat was lifting. I got stronger, more flexible, developed my core and could see my abs  for the first time ever. And today I’m pretty sure that my booty is about three inches higher than where it was before — hello! I often find myself doing a double take in the mirror when I walk by quickly, like, where did that come from?

I mean I am in no way going to be mistaken for Coco or a bikini model anytime soon, but I love Bar Method. The body-sculpting workout (which is like a hybrid of ballet, yoga, Pilates and sometimes hell) does a lot for me mentally too. I’m more disciplined, competitive, focused and happy. The first time I did push ups on my toes I was more proud of myself than anything I can remember in recent years. I’ve also made sweet friends and the instructors are so encouraging and inspiring. I’m not being paid to say any of this I just wanted to share since Bar Method is a huge part of my life yet I never mention it here.

There are locations popping up all over the place and affordable introductory specials so that you can try it for a month. You’ll see why I’m addicted.

Tips and Tricks: DIY Cranberry Vodka

This is a fantastic hostess gift for the holidays that’s also great to keep on hand for any holiday-related stresses. This DIY is easy peasy — you just need a bag of fresh cranberries, one lime, sugar and some vodka.

1. Poke a hole in each cranberry and pour into your bottle, filling it up one-third of the way.

2. Using a knife, peel the rind off a lime and place into the jar. Then fill the rest up with cranberries.

3. Add 1-2 tbsp. of sugar to counteract the bitterness of the cranberries and then pour the vodka on top of the mixture, seal the jar and shake.

4. Shake the bottle every day or two and let the infused vodka sit for two to three weeks (perfect timing for the holidays.)

Ask Victoria: Work Holiday Gifts

Question: The holidays are around the corner and I never know who in my office to buy gifts for. I work in a small office so I feel obligated to buy for everyone, but probably can’t afford that. What do you suggest?

Answer: Definitely buy something for your boss and/or owner of your company. If you have no idea what they would like, then something simple like a nice bottle of wine or gift card to a nice restaurant will do (around $100 if you can afford it.) If you have an assistant or someone who supports what you do, consider giving them something as well (around $25 is perfectly acceptable.) For other colleagues, assemble a gift basket of treats or send a box of cupcakes as a surprise. I like to always have a few small gifts on hand as backup in case someone unexpectedly gives me something.

Manatee Sighting!

Christmas came early for me this year. After four trips to Florida, one membership in the Save the Manatee Club and a manatee adoption (Paddy O’Doyle) I finally saw a manatee! I actually saw at least eight manatees, which was mind blowing and so exciting that I could barely take pictures.

Tim’s cousin James is a fishing boat captain in the Florida Keys and he took us out on his boat. I’ve had many failed attempts at finding manatees even though people tell you they are everywhere. This was one of the best days ever and I owe it all to my new family who made it happen. We had an amazing trip that I’ll share more about later.

Watch this short video for more manatee love (you can hear me gasp “Oh my god babe!“)…

Getting Personal: A Little Vacation

Ever since I left journalism about a year ago, my life has been so much more balanced. I used to work several nights a week covering black tie events, award shows and fashion parties, which often meant skipping dinner, getting home after midnight and transcribing quotes until I could barely see straight.

Now I have a wonderful group of clients who cause little to no stress and while I still work quite a bit (when you freelance life isn’t ever 9 to 5), I am able to cook dinner most nights, workout, take weekend getaways and see friends for lunches.

Next week we are headed to Florida to visit Tim’s family and see friends so I will be taking a little vacation from posting as well. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I’ll see you when we return!

Tips and Tricks: The Thanksgiving Table

How is Thanksgiving already a week away? We will be heading to sunny Boca Raton, Florida to enjoy the holiday with my husband’s family. Here are some easy tips and tricks for warming up your holiday table:

1. Try a new patterned tablecloth for the evening, especially if you typically leave your table bare or stick with solid colors. Printed cloths also hide any accidental spills or small stains.

2. Decorate with natural elements such as small gilded pine cones, mini pumpkins and rustic florals. Sprigs of rosemary or thyme look great on top of napkins and smell heavenly.

3. Candlelight flatters everyone and warms up a room in an instant. Low votives do the job or opt for elegant candle sticks. Scented candles are perfect for powder rooms, entryways and living areas, but for the dining room stick to unscented ones so the food can really be the star.

Ask Victoria: Online Shopping Sales

Question: I recently had a baby and will not be hitting the mall this holiday season. Believe it or not, I haven’t really shopped online much before. Where are some good sites to start?

In addition to supporting friends and small businesses, I love shopping online, especially at this time of year when stores can be painfully crowded. These are some of my favorite online shopping sites because they often offer discounts, free shipping and speedy service (plus, they offer gift wrap if you don’t have time or energy.) Plus, you can shop at any hour, which may come in handy with a newborn!

Gifted Ones: Happy Veteran’s Day

The few times that I’ve been around large groups of U.S. Military made a big impact on me. One of the best days was seeing an aircraft carrier return with hundreds of service men and women and watching them reunite with their families. These selfless Americans all over the world are making serious sacrifices each day. Thank you for your service and a special shout out to my father-in-law Roger. Happy Veteran’s Day.
