Settling In

JuliusSchulmanWe still need to find a comfy, but stylish living room chair, but phase one of our decorating is pretty much done I’m happy to say. We are finally out of the the workmen-here-everyday phase and are now just enjoying living here. At least once a day one of us says, “Can you believe this is ours?” The first month has been great and I feel ready to start having friends over for some small gatherings by the fire pit or around the grill. Hope you are getting excited for summer too.

Hello Sunshine

flamingosThe last few days have been full on June Gloom and I realize how much the sunshine (or lack thereof) really can effect people’s mood — mine included. This morning I woke up and the sun was shining so bright I was practically blinded while making our morning protein shake. Life just feels better when you have some sunshine, particularly the golden rays in California. It’s pretty hard to top magic hour here right before the sun goes down.

Speaking of sun, we did something pretty bold the other day and booked a two week trip to Kauai for Tim’s 40th birthday and Christmas. It’s the first time in my life that I won’t be with my family for the holidays, but since I’m so lucky to get to see them whenever I want, we are just going for it. It will be our first time back since our honeymoon and the longest we’ve ever stayed on an island.

Gifted Ones: Love Me Anyway Author Tiffany Hawk

LoveMeAnywayI met Tiffany Hawk on a press trip back in 2005, when I used to do a lot of travel writing. We were both young journalists, exploring Holland together, eating Dutch pancakes and walking the cobblestone streets. We stayed in touch and she later became an editor and friend. I remember she was working on a book over the years, as so many of my writer friends have done over the years, but hers actually got published — and it’s fantastic. I just read it in two sittings within 24 hours and highly recommend that you do the same.

Love Me Anyway is a coming-of-age novel about love, family and life at 35,000 feet. Tiffany, who really was a flight attendant for United, did an amazing job of capturing those twentysomething years when we are all trying to figure out who we are and what we want, as well as the idiosyncrasies of a career that’s, literallly, up in the air. The book is funny, charming, heartbreaking and the perfect summer read.

Congratulations Tiffany!

Most Wanted: Warby Parker’s Ocean Avenue Collection

WarbyParkerOceanAvenueCollectionMy friend Emily turned me onto Warby Parker, the makers of affordable and super stylish eyewear and sunglasses. Since I don’t personally wear glasses (but may, ahem, own 20+ pairs of sunnies) of course I’m drawn more to these babies. But, it’s worth having a look at the entire new collection — 8 optical frames and 14 sunglasses with awesome names — which is inspired by the Coney Island boardwalk and summer fun. Plus, for every pair sold, a pair is given to someone in need.

Side note: Their frames would make a great Father’s Day gift as well (think Don Draper on vacation in Hawaii).

Getting Personal: Our Holiday Weekend

IMG_5722Hope you had a nice Memorial Day weekend! We had a busy one celebrating my Mom’s birthday on Friday night, going wedding dress shopping with my sister (there were many tears) and then my best friend came to visit and stay over in our new home. In between working and decorating, we have been making the most of our outdoor space, especially the grill and fire pit.

IMG_5717One of the most affordable things we have done that has people going crazy (including me) is our new string lights from Target. They are less than $12 per strand (we used 5 total) and jazzed up our backyard in an instant (and they remind me of our wedding.)

Getting Personal: Happy Birthday Mom!

MomHow amazing is my Mom in these photos? I would kill for that hat in the top right image and many other items she wore back in the day. Born in Dublin, in a small Jewish community, she was a rule breaker from the start and eventually ran off to London to be a hairdresser during the swinging sixties. While in San Francisco on an extended holiday she met my Dad and the rest is history.

Happy Birthday to an incredible woman, mother and friend! You always were and still are the coolest Mom I know. Love you so much!

PS. I may be the social media expert, but  my Mom has 988 followers on Pinterest. Check her out!
